Timelapse microscopy of the growth of crystals of caesium chloride. The different colours indicate regions of different thickness of the growing crystal film, and different orientations of the crystal structure. Caesium chloride is an ionic compound similar to table salt, with caesium replacing sodium. The difference in relative sizes between a sodium ion and a caesium ion means that the two compounds have different crystal structures. Filmed with differential interference contrast illumination
