Last month, papers across Europe ran with the story, citing a blog posted briefly on a respected French newspaper's website. Though the speculation had made the rounds of Parisian political and media circles for weeks, it was a rare occasion that the press covered a politician's private life -- and Sarkozy associates now say it may have been part of a bigger, and more menacing plot.
