Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) male sniffing a female at the Chudop waterhole in Etosha National Park, Namibia and then displaying a Flehmen response . This is the process where a bull giraffe induces a female giraffe to urinate allowing him to determine if she is oestrus - in heat and ready to mate. He will lift his upper lip, flare his nostrils and inhale. In addition to sniffing the urine, he may even taste it, taking in additional chemical cues to see if she is ready to accept a male for mating
