Mosquito larvae feeding - HD 影片檔

Mosquito larvae feeding. Light microscope footage of mosquito larvae (family Culicidae) feeding near the surface of water. Mosquito larvae are aquatic and breathe through spiracles located on their abdomen, or like these larvae, through a siphon (breathing tube) on the end of the abdomen. They feed by wafting algae and other detritus suspended in the water into their mouths, using the beating hairs of their mouth brushes to create a current. On the upper right of the frame the anal gills of one larva can be seen. These structures are found on the anal segment at the end of the abdomen, and arise from a thin membrane around the anus. They are thought to be involved in osmoregulation, the maintenance of correct concentration of fluids and electrolytes.
