Sir John Tenniel (1820 - 1914) is most celebrated for his illustrations for Lewis Carroll's (Alice's Adventures In Wonderland). He also produced many cartoons for the satirical Victorian magazine, Punch, and these were collected into two or three books. Punch magazine took its name from Mr. Punch, the puppet in the Punch and Judy shows. (With the use of a large stick, Mr. Punch lays about him in every direction.) This illustration shows Father Christmas wearing a hat decorated with holly and icicles, carrying a large basket filled by a Christmas turkey (and maybe presents underneath). Mr. Punch welcomes him with open arms. Frontispiece: I believe this may be from an American edition of the 1860s, since in English editions the words (From 'Punch') appear in print rather than as part of the drawing. Also in English editions, the address is shown as (10, Bouverie Street). The first American edition covers cartoons drawn between 1853 and 1862.
