Flooding Continues To Debilitate Pakistani Lives

SUKKUR, PAKISTAN - AUGUST 27: Farmers transport crops from their respective homes to the other side of the flooded river embankment on August 27, 2024 in Sukkur, Pakistan. Villagers have been cut off from roads, the city and access to essential services. A boat taxi service is a lifeline for families to access schools, hospitals, basic alimentation, crops and livestock. Agriculture is the sole income for most families in this region. Annually, the Indus River expands for at least 10km on each side due to rain and melting glaciers in different parts of Pakistan and neighbouring countries, causing floods in the lower course of the river. The Indus River is a transboundary river of Asia running through Pakistan and the most important water resource to the Punjab and Sindh plains. Massive floods have recently impacted millions in South Asia where torrential rains have caused flash floods and landslides with several rivers overflowing and major dams at risk. The large economic disparities in the South Asia region have only magnified the sufferings of the most vulnerable and marginalized communities, with a large death toll and displacement figure year on year. In Pakistan, at least 242 people have lost their lives from July 1 to August 24, 2024. (Photo by Elke Scholiers/Getty Images)
