Methanol is used as a catalyst to react with cooking oil and sodium hydroxide in the reaction tank (behind left) to produce biodiesel for navy vehicles and vessels at the Royal Thai Naval Dockyard. 6000 liters a day are produced at the naval yard. King Bhumibol of Thailand has been a proponent of renewable energy for over 20 years. Biofuels can be directly extracted from oil-yielding plants, starch and sugar.
