Some examples are here. The veteran pitchers start going downhill - up come the likes of Johnny Kucks, who has won 14 games and lost 4 thus far, and Tom Sturdivant, who is 8 and 2. When Yankees' catcher Yogi Berra must rest, they have on hand Elston Howard, a catching star in his own right and good outfield replacement as well. Bill Skowron now looms as the possible next Lou Gehrig at first base for the Yankees. Then of course there is shortstop Gil McDougald who is ready to step into the shoes of the top shortstop of them all, Phil Rizzuto, when Phil leaves baseball.
